In late July 1955 in Riga, the Jubilee Spartakiad took place, featuring sports disciplines such as athletics, swimming, boxing, Greco-Roman wrestling, weightlifting, gymnastics, tennis, basketball, volleyball and, of course, cycling. In total, more than 700 athletes competed in these events.
The newsreel shows the men’s cross-country cycling race in Mežaparks over a 30 km distance (6 laps).

After the starting shot, the colorful stream of cyclists quickly disappeared
behind the hills, only to return to the starting point about twelve minutes later.
From the checkpoint it was reported that the first rider to pass was last year’s
cross-country champion B. Valpēteris, followed by
Z. Cakulis.
After the first lap, Z. Cakulis had taken the lead, closely followed by A. Aniņš. Cakulis gradually increased his advantage and secured a convincing victory, having narrowly missed out on victory the previous day in the 200 km road race.
