In 2014, within the framework of the Ventspils Library event series “Story Time at the Library”, an event titled “A Conversation about Cycling in Ventspils” took place. All interested participants were invited to share stories and memories about cycling in Ventspils together with cycling coach Viesturs Riekstiņš and cyclist Eģils Kraulērs.
During the event, the Ventspils Library carried out the digitization of the collected materials – photographs, diplomas, awards, and other memorabilia – in order to preserve historical evidence of this sport, which was once very popular in Ventspils.
Photographs were contributed by J. Štelbaums, G. Kracs, Dz. Ūdriņš, V. Zemnieks, E. Kraulērs, and V. Riekstiņš.
A few days ago, members of RSB “Latvello” met with employees of the Ventspils Library, who entrusted us (with the consent of the original owners) with copies of these photographs – a total of approximately 200 images.
The photographs feature many outstanding cyclists from the 1960s–1980s, as well as several images taken during the 1920s–1940s. Work is currently underway to identify the athletes shown in the photographs.
