Treasure Chest – or in this case, suitcases!
We would like to share historical materials belonging to Ziedonis Cakuls (a legendary Latvian Soviet cyclist) and Ārija Cakule (née Birkhāne – Latvian Soviet record holder and champion in speed skating and cycling), which were entrusted to us for research by their relatives.
These suitcases had spent several decades stored away in an attic, covered with dust and the marks of time, yet they contain invaluable historical evidence of the Cakuls family’s lives and sporting achievements.
Upon opening them, we discovered several well-preserved photo albums, several hundred photographs and 90 rolls of film, as well as a vast number of newspaper clippings, diplomas, badges, and awards. All of these materials date back to the period 1949–1964.
In the images we also recognized other famous cyclists and speed skaters of the 1950s, although many athletes remain unidentified for now. We hope that, in cooperation with specialists from the Latvian Sports Museum and the Saulkrasti Bicycle Museum, we will be able to identify them.
One of the suitcases containing these historical materials can be seen in a photograph dated 1955 (inside the suitcase, a receipt dated 1954 has also been preserved). This suitcase, now already 70 years old, traveled together with Ziedonis and Ārija Cakuls across several Soviet Union republics.
It carries not only physical objects, but also stories and memories of an era when the Cakuls family actively participated in sporting competitions and other significant events.
We are proud and grateful for the opportunity to digitize and share these materials, making them accessible to a wider audience and to future generations. It is quite possible that similar materials are preserved in the homes of other athletes’ relatives, and that they could be just as significant for our shared sporting history.
