Yesterday, our association received these wonderful photographs from the descendants of A. Apsītis, and we would like to share them with you.
Andrejs Apsītis (07.02.1888 – 02.09.1945) was one of the most versatile Latvian cyclists, competing both on the track and in road races.
He began cycling in 1908. At the age of twenty, Andrejs Apsītis confidently challenged and outperformed German cyclists.
In 1913, A. Apsītis joined the cycling club “Marss”. He was the only representative of the Russian Olympic team who managed to finish the demanding 320 km race around Lake Mälaren at the 1912 Stockholm Olympic Games. Twelve Russian cyclists started the race, but only the Latvian A. Apsītis reached the finish, earning 60th place and receiving a Diploma of Merit for exceptional bravery.
This was followed by outstanding performances at the All-Russian Olympiads – gold medals in Kyiv (1913) and Riga (1914), as well as Latvian champion titles on the track and road in 1930 and 1931.
One hundred years ago – in 1924 – Andrejs Apsītis competed in his second Olympic Games in Paris, taking part in track cycling as a member of the Latvian national team. (Source – Latvian Sports Museum)
