Today, Arkādijs Svece has joined our association.
Arkādijs Svece is a distinguished Latvian bicycle mechanic and former cyclist who has made a significant contribution to Latvian sport. Born in 1939 in Rēzekne, he began his cycling career in 1957, training under Ojārs Siliņš and representing the VEF cycling section.
Arkādijs is a champion and multiple medalist: bronze medallist at the 1959 Latvian Championship in the road race; on the track – Champion of the USSR Armed Forces in the group race in Tula and bronze medallist in Leningrad (1959 and 1961); silver medallist in 1960 in the 4 km individual pursuit; and a four-time Latvian champion in long-distance events.
Later, Arkādijs became a top-level sports specialist: mechanic of the USSR national track cycling team (1986–1988), mechanic of the Latvian national team at five Olympic Games, as well as at numerous European and World Championships.
His strong work ethic, discipline, and professionalism have earned him respect among both colleagues and athletes. Arkādijs Svece also contributed to Dainis Ozols’ Olympic bronze medal at the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games.
Arkādijs Svece’s contribution to sport has been recognised with several awards, including the Latvian Sports Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2017. A documentary film has also been made about him, titled “The Watchmaker Arkādijs Svece”.
Even today, Arkādijs remains devoted to his profession, working five days a week from 06:00 to 16:00.
