Some time ago, members of the RSB “Latvello” visited cycling veteran Faris Kučinskis, who was born in Liepāja and currently lives in Saulkrasti.
Faris was actively involved in competitive cycling during the 1950s and 1960s. His sporting achievements are impressive:
- USSR Champion in tandem racing
- Four-time silver and one-time bronze medalist
- Six-time USSR Cup winner in tandem racing, classical sprint and team elimination race
- Six-time USSR Armed Forces Champion in various track disciplines
- Winner of five additional medals in USSR competitions
- Sixteen-time Latvian Champion in individual and team track disciplines
Faris also successfully competed in international competitions in Romania, Austria, Germany, Hungary and Czechoslovakia, and was a candidate for the USSR national team for participation in the Tokyo Olympic Games.
Faris considers his greatest sprint achievement to be his victory at the USSR Championship in Leningrad, where, in a beautiful tactical race, he managed to defeat the leading favorites of that time – Vladimir Leonov and Boris Vasiliev.
Faris Kučinskis supports our project, the goal of which is to create an extensive, publicly accessible database containing information about Latvian cyclists, including speed skaters. To support this initiative, Faris donated more than 100 historical photographs to the association.
